How to do division (bus stop method)
In division you divide the dividend digit by digit, from left to right. At each step you estimate how many times the divisor fits the digits so far, write the quotient digit, multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit. What is left at the end is the remainder.
Tip: each sheet leaves space under the calculation to work out the division. To check: quotient × divisor + remainder should give the dividend.
Divide
Look at the first digits of the dividend and estimate how many times the divisor fits: write the digit in the quotient.
Multiply and subtract
Multiply the quotient digit by the divisor and subtract from the digits considered.
Bring down
Bring down the next digit of the dividend next to the partial remainder and repeat.
The remainder
When there are no more digits to bring down, what is left is the remainder of the division.
Division: frequently asked questions
When is division taught?
In Years 3-4 of primary school, first with a one-digit divisor and exact, then with a remainder and larger divisors.
What is the remainder of a division?
It is the number left over when the divisor does not fit a whole number of times into the dividend. It always holds: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes, completely. Generate as many as you like, show the answers and print them in A4 or save as PDF, no sign-up.
