How to do column addition
In column addition you write the numbers one under the other, lining up digits of the same value (ones under ones, tens under tens). You add column by column starting from the right: when a column adds to more than 9, you write the ones digit and carry the ten to the next column.
Tip: print one sheet with answers hidden for the child and one with answers shown for you. Marking it together right afterwards is when most learning happens.
Line them up
Write the numbers one under the other, lining up ones with ones and tens with tens.
Start from the right
Add the ones column first, then the tens, and so on to the left.
Carrying
If a column goes over 9, write the ones and carry the ten over the next column.
Check
A quick estimate (round the numbers) tells you if the answer is reasonable.

What is carrying in addition?
It is the ten that is left over when a column adds to more than 9: you write the ones digit below the line and carry the ten over the next column.
