Number before, after and comparing
Understanding the order of numbers is the basis of arithmetic. The number before is the one just before (one less), the number after the one just after (one more). Comparing with greater than (>) and less than (<) and putting numbers in order help the child build the «number line» in their head.
Crocodile trick: the > or < symbol is the mouth of a hungry crocodile, which always opens towards the bigger number. 7 > 3 because the crocodile «eats» the 7.
Before and after
One less and one more. Great for practising counting forwards and backwards.
Greater and less than
The point of the symbol faces the smaller number; the opening the bigger one.
Order the numbers
Lining them up from smallest to largest reinforces place value.
Gradual ranges
Start with numbers to 20, then 100 and 1000 as the child grows.
Numbers: frequently asked questions
What are before and after?
The number before is the one just before (one less), after the one just after (one more). Before 40 is 39, after is 41.
How do you compare numbers?
With > (greater than) and < (less than): the point always faces the smaller number. For multi-digit numbers, compare the highest-value digits first.
Which year groups are these for?
For early primary: to 20 for the youngest, to 100 and 1000 as they grow. Choose the range you need.
